Daniel Lewis receives an Honorary Doctor of Fine arts Degree from the University of Florida.
For his leadership in dance and education in an artistic discipline.
I am so pleased that the University of Florida has chosen to bestow upon me an honorary doctorate in the arts. Receiving this award is the highest honor one can get in education. My main goal now, at this point in my life, is to take the time to become an artist again, and to make sure every child gets introduced to the arts at an early age.

A tribute to the work Daniel Lewis has done at the New World School of the Arts as the Founding Dean of Dance. “It is a bettersweet feeling for me to leave, but the school has grown up and it is time for me move on and get back to my love of teaching again. I will miss the students terribly but as I watch alumni in the field I will always have a wonderful feel of the work I have done.”
The world-class concert featured performances by acclaimed dance companies, dancers, and choreographers including Gerri Houlihan from American Dance Festival; Michael Uthoff, Artistic Director of Dance St. Louis; Jim May, Artistic Director Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble; Robert Battle, Artistic Director of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; Martha Graham Dance Company; Rosie Herrera Dance Company; Carla Maxwell, Artistic Director of Limón Dance Company; Tango for All Company, as well as choreographers and alumni from New World School of the Arts, among others.
Daniel Lewis, acceptance speech For his Lifetime Achievement Award. Bestowed by the National Dance Education Organization, in Tucson, Arizona, this distinguished accolade recognizes Lewis’ significant contribution in the field of dance during a career that spans more than four decades. “Receiving an award from your peers has to be one of the most rewarding honors you can get. Although my focus is on dance, I am committed to making sure every child has a chance to find his or her voice in the art. I have spent over 44 years in dance education and have seen many changes. Being recognized as someone who has taken part in children being successful is the best thank you one can receive,” said Lewis upon his acceptance.
